Day 25, Month 12, Year 2728 of Our Exile (Tue Mar 13 23:40:19 PDT 2007)

What does it mean to divide the word of truth aright?

2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Bill Klimek mentioned a couple weeks ago the correct meaning of "dividing the word of truth". In ancient Hebrew and Greek, therewerenospacesbetweenthewords. Also, they did not have small letters and capital letters. ALL LETTERS WERE CAPITAL LETTERS. SOTHETEXTLOOKEDLIKETHIS. Most of the time you could "divide" the words accurately, but sometimes it would be hard. That is where training came in. Sometimes you could divide the words in different places and still get a result that made sense. The key was knowing which was the right sense of the word.

We today rely on the division of words made by Jewish Rabbi's and Catholic theologians. Can we trust them? I trust God to lead us into correct understanding. Maybe he wants us to learn Hebrew and Greek. Then we can begin to divide the words of Scripture, and even divide them correctly.

Of course, the traditional understanding of the verse is also correct; to rightly divide the word of truth means to understand the words correctly.
